Pumpkin Picking at Jolly Pumpkin, Pitt Farm

Somerset's Jolly Pumpkin patch sits at Pitt Farm, close enough to the motorway that it works as a stop on a longer journey as well as a morning out on its own. Over fifty varieties of pumpkin, squash and gourd are grown across the Jolly Pumpkin patches, so the field holds a good deal more than the supermarket orange.

Entry covers the pumpkin patch, the maze and the photo opportunities. Jolly Pumpkin is clear that props and activities differ from patch to patch, so what you find here will not match the Devon site exactly; come expecting Wellington's own version rather than a copy of it. Pumpkins are paid for on top of entry and priced by size, from about £1 for the small ones up to £15 for the biggest.

Tickets are booked in advance with a half-hourly arrival slot. The slot is for arriving rather than leaving, so once you are in you can stay until the field closes. Wheelbarrows are available for lugging pumpkins back to the car, pushchairs are fine and you are welcome to bring a picnic.

It is a field, and the ground is often uneven and bumpy, so wellies or shoes you can cross a rough surface in are the right call. Dogs cannot come for hygiene reasons, other than guide and medical assistance dogs. Anyone photographing professionally, or planning to profit from the pictures afterwards, needs to buy a Photographers Pass before they arrive.
