Tynemouth Aquarium Review

Fish swimming in a tank

We invited North East, mum of two, blogger Sacha to visit Tynemouth Aquarium with her family.

Find out what Sacha and her children thought of their visit….

Where is Tynemouth Aquarium?

Exhibits at Tynemouth Aquarium
Located in the beautiful coastal town of Tynemouth in the north-east of England, the aquarium is home to a diverse range of sea creatures, from friendly clownfish and colourful seahorses, to majestic rays and fearsome sharks.

You can walk through the aquarium’s tunnel and watch in amazement as sharks, rays and other fish swim overhead. There are also interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences, including a touch tank where you can get up close and personal with starfish and crabs.

The aquarium is great for people of all ages, ideal if you’re a family looking for a fun day out.

Sacha’s Tynemouth Aquarium Experience

A trip to Tynemouth Aquarium is an excellent way to spend quality time with your family while learning about marine life. The aquarium offers a unique experience that is both educational and fun! From the colourful fish to my son’s favourites, the majestic reef sharks. There is a lot packed into this aquarium for you and your family to enjoy.

Interactive Exhibits

During our visit, we participated in the interactive exhibits, watched live demonstrations and got up close to a huge selection of different creatures; from Arabian angelfish to seals and seahorses!

The aquarium provides many visually engaging and tactile opportunities to educate visitors of all ages. Allowing them to learn about sea animals, conservation and what we can do to protect our seas and oceans.

Meeting Seals

My children loved stamping their Seal’s Adventure Passports as they explored.

There are passport stations to emboss the pages throughout the aquarium and then if you take the passport back to the front desk at the end of your visit you will get a sticker for completing it!

Seal Show and Hospital

We enjoyed watching the Seal Show in Tynemouth’s impressive outdoor ‘Seal Cove’ exhibit. The children loved watching the seal’s tricks and learning about how they’re trained and cared for in the onsite seal hospital. We were able to walk up to the Seal Hospital and see the current patients who are being nursed back to health until they’re big and strong enough to return to life in the wild. My daughter was particularly taken with a cute little seal called Strawberry!

Learn about Rivers

I thought that ‘River Giants’ was one of Tynemouth’s most impressive exhibits. It’s an immersive area that feels like you’re exploring the rivers of South America and the monstrous freshwater fish that live there! Whilst here we also learned about the boiling rivers of the Amazonian River Basin, a fascinating phenomenon which causes areas of the rivers to become so hot that nothing can survive there!

Bay & Laurel Restaurant

We ate at the onsite restaurant Bay & Laurel; aptly named for the aquarium’s beachfront location and local legend Stan Laurel- with nods to the famous silent film actor in the décor.

Outdoor Play Area

After we’d enjoyed our lunches we spent time in the outdoor play area, eating ice creams and playing in the Spring sunshine before heading home through the Ocean Tunnel which leads visitors right under the ‘Aztec Reef’ exhibit!

We made lasting memories at Tynemouth Aquarium, it was a great opportunity to spend time together whilst experiencing some wonders of the sea.

So next time you’re looking for a fun and educational activity to do with your family, consider a trip to Tynemouth Aquarium.
