Expect a rich mixture of history and heritage in our list of great things to do in Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town.
At the Colchester Castle Museum you’ll get the chance to re-discover life during the times of the Romans and Norman Invaders. Throughout it’s 2,000 year history you’ll walk in the shoes of all those that came before right up to the devastation of the city by Queen Boudicca, who led an uprising against the Roman Empire.
The Natural History Museum Colchester is free to enter and has lots of interesting and interactive exhibits that help to educate children about the local wildlife. Get hands on as you crawl through a super sized badger sett and use the microscopes to discover life in the dirt!
There are plenty of outdoor spaces available to explore on Colchester family days out. Go and see the wildlife in their natural habitat at the Abberton Reservoir Nature Reserve, where there are lots of spots for bird watching, rambling and a visitors centre to tell you all about the animals you can expect to see.
If you’re after something a bit bigger Colchester Zoo has over 260 species set in 60 acres of parkland and lakes. Get up close to and feed elephants and giraffes and take a walk through the tropical butterfly house.
There are lots of indoor activities too! Jump Street has over 90 trampolines plus dodgeball and basketball courts, have a game of bowling at TenPin Colchester or strap on your skates and get down to the funky beat at Rollerworld.
