Poole's Cavern and Buxton Country Park
For centuries curious visitors to Buxton have explored and marvelled at the natural subterranean world that is Poole’s Cavern!
Known as the ‘First Wonder of the Peak’ after an early travel guide published in 1630 Poole’s Cavern became a popular attraction for wealthy visitors and even royalty.
Explore Poole’s Cavern today with our expert guides and journey through the beautifully illuminated chambers to discover for yourself the magnificent underground scenery of the Peak District.
With paved walkways and only 28 steps throughout the tour is suitable for all ages.
Back above ground take a stroll through Buxton Country Park woodlands to the hilltop viewpoint of Solomon’s Temple with spectacular peak land views. Our Visitor centre includes the Cafe at the Cavern with a wide range of delicious produce including daily specials, light snacks and fair trade coffee. The visitor centre and cafe is dog friendly with canine treats available too. Our Rock and gem shop has a superb collection of gifts, books and local produce.
Poole’s Cavern is open all year every day, rain or shine underground it’s always fine.

It may be worth checking out Poole's Cavern's website to see if there are any special events or seasonal fun things to do that may be going on during the day.
We do strongly suggest you contact Poole's Cavern before you set off on your family day out, just to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices, as there is nothing worse than disappointed kids in the back of your car after a long journey.

...got any top tips?
We are an 'all weather' attraction but to make your visit more enjoyable we advise a warm layer to wear in the cave and windproof for the hill top and sensible footwear for a walk . The cavern tour has 28 steps but buggies can get round and the woods walks involve steps and stiles to get to the hill top. Dogs are very welcome in the park, centre and cafe but we regret cannot go on the cavern tours. The cavern has 28 steps and has a handrail throughout. There is wheelchair access for the first third of the cavern route. The country park trails are not as accessible but call us for details.
