Nestled in the heart of Leyland, Lancashire, Worden Park is a delightful oasis that offers a perfect escape for families seeking a blend of outdoor adventure, natural beauty, and recreational activities. With its sprawling green spaces, enchanting woodlands, and an array of attractions, Worden Park has something to captivate every member of the family.
Spanning over 150 acres, Worden Park is a treasure trove of lush greenery and scenic landscapes. As you step into the park, you'll be greeted by well-maintained lawns that provide ample space for kids to run around and play games.
Gardens and Maze
For nature enthusiasts, this country park boasts an enchanting mature woodland area and natural landscapes that beckons exploration. Take a leisurely stroll along the winding paths and discover the wonders of the park's diverse ecosystem. From ancient trees to vibrant wildflowers, there's no shortage of natural beauty to behold.
The historic hedge maze is open to the public at all times and is one of very few such mazes which is free of charge to explore. Due to the age of the maze, visitors are asked to take care not to damage the ancient hedging and young children must be supervised at all times. Worden's maze has a lime tree in the centre and (fair warning!) also has the extra feature of having two entrances. One is the real entrance and the other being a fool's or false entrance leading only to dead ends in either direction...
One of the highlights of Worden Park is the splendid walled and formal gardens, a true horticultural gem. Bursting with vibrant colours and sweet scents, the garden is a visual feast for the senses. Let the kids run through the fragrant rose gardens and admire the carefully sculpted topiaries that add a touch of whimsy to the surroundings.
Children's Adventure Playground
To keep little ones entertained, Worden Park offers a fantastic children's playground. The playground is equipped with 22 pieces of equipment for toddlers (ages 2 to 6) including swings, climbing frames, springy toys and a large sand pit complete with sand diggers. There are 14 pieces of equipment for juniors (ages 7 to 12) including swings, a see-saw, climbing frames, slides, a rope climbing frame and a cableway.
Not to mention there's also a crazy golf course and an orienteering course! Your kids will have so much to keep them occupied!
Model Railway
As you explore further, you'll stumble upon the bustling Worden Park Miniature Railway. Climb aboard one of the charming locomotives and embark on a delightful train ride through the park.
The railway is a hit among children, and adults can't help but join in on the excitement too - a family day out everyone can enjoy!
Worden Hall
For those seeking a bit of history, a visit to Worden Hall is a must. This magnificent Grade II-listed building houses the Lancashire Infantry Museum, where you can delve into the region's military heritage. Step back in time as you explore the museum's fascinating exhibits, including weaponry, uniforms, and personal stories of soldiers who served in the Lancashire regiments.
There's also an arts and crafts centre where the kids can get a bit messy!
