Attraction Information

Nestled in the heart of Berkshire, Windsor Great Park beckons as a verdant oasis, offering a wealth of activities that promise an unforgettable day out for families. This historic park, once a private hunting ground for Windsor Castle, now opens its gates to families seeking a blend of adventure, education, and relaxation in the great outdoors. It’s a place where history, nature, and entertainment blend seamlessly, making it a perfect destination for families looking to create lasting memories.

A Peek into Royal History

The park, with 1,000 years worth of history dates back to the times of William the Conqueror, steeping in royal heritage. The Long Walk, a striking 2.65-mile path leading from the George IV Gateway at Windsor Castle to the Copper Horse statue, presents a majestic view that captivates both young and old.

Things To Do

Windsor Great Park covers an impressive 4,800 acres. It's a haven for families who love the outdoors. The park's sprawling landscape is home to ancient woodlands, gardens in bloom, and open grasslands - perfect for a family picnic or a leisurely walk. There are two gardens to explore, plus Virginia Water, which used to be the largest body of water in Britain and has plenty of wildlife to look out for, plus it is the site of a Chinese fishing temple.

The Royal Park is a great place to take the kids for a day out! With ancient trees, ethereal lakes that are simply picturesque and a deer park too! Head over to Chapel Wood & Cow Pond to stroll along the serene ornamental lake that was created in the 1700s! There's also the Obelisk Lawn & Obelisk Pond not far from The Savill Garden which is a picture-perfect place to relax and enjoy a picnic!

The Long Walk & Deer Park offers beautiful views of Windsor Great Park and is almost 2.5 miles long as it makes its way to the magnificent Windsor Castle - the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world!! The Deer Park was once a Norman hunting forest and is home to one of the largest populations of ancient oak trees in Europe. Here you can gaze upon the deer that live here in their natural environment. Please remember they are wild animals and should not be approached.

The Landscape is an excellent venue for natural activity programmes or exciting activities such as fishing, cycling, rollerblading, flying model aircraft and taking the dog for a walk. If you are bringing your dog, it is a good idea to check online before your visit as there are some areas where dogs need to be kept on the lead.

Children's Play Area

Adventure Play is a fantastic children's play area for toddlers and younger children, that offers plenty of space to play and enjoy a picnic! You'll find a clump of trees to climb, with GIANT acorns, walkways, super cool slides, sculptures and even treehouses to conquer! It makes for a truly fantastic family day out!

A variety of events are held throughout the year, such as carriage rides and during the summer, children's entertainment such as outdoor theatres and puppet shows. Most areas are pushchair and wheelchair accessible, although places like the Valley Gardens, by their nature, will not be so easy to reach.

Seasonal Attractions for Year-Round Fun

The park comes alive in spring and summer. The Savill Garden, one of Britain’s greatest ornamental gardens, becomes a riot of colour. Families can enjoy the blooming flowers and themed gardens, an excellent backdrop for memorable photos. In autumn, the park is a spectacle of golden hues, with crunchy leaves underfoot - ideal for an autumnal walk. Winter, too, has its charm with frost-covered landscapes and the possibility of festive events around Christmas, making it a magical time to visit.

Food & Drink

There are a number of places you can sit and grab a bite to eat. From The Gallery Cafe in The Savill Garden, where you can munch on sandwiches, cakes and drinks. Or you can pop into The Savill Garden Kitchen for a range of hot and cold meals and a range of refreshments.

Of course, you can also enjoy a lovely picnic, there's plenty of space to sprawl out! But please remember to take your rubbish with you - no one likes litter.

Why We Recommend Windsor Great Park for Families

We think Windsor Great Park is an incredible day out for families! Not only do we know about their fab children's adventure playground, but we suggest visiting during the summer where the wildlife is teeming with activity and flora in full abundance!

It's a place where every member of the family, from toddlers to grandparents, can find something enjoyable and engaging. Whether it’s basking in the beauty of nature, diving into the depths of royal history, or simply enjoying a day of play and relaxation, Windsor Great Park offers it all.

So, pack your picnic basket, grab your walking shoes, and head over to Windsor Great Park for a day filled with joy, exploration, and family bonding.
