Weston super Mare Museum will take you on an exciting journey of discovery through the history of North Somerset, from prehistory to present day. This treasure trove of a museum is a great place to take the kids as there is free entry for under 16s!
Explore the natural history of the area, visit a Victorian dentist and chemist shop, and behold historic costumes, including wedding dresses. You can experience a typical Westonian's home of the 1900s in ‘Clara's Cottage', a cottage next to the museum that was built in 1864, and has 3 rooms (Parlour, Kitchen, and Bedroom), displayed as they would have been when the building was occupied by Clara Payne and her family.
The Seaside Holidays Gallery is a specialty of the museum, and features paraphernalia you would expect for a traditional seaside holiday in Weston between 1870 and 1940, with different sections covering topics such as the pier, excursions, the beach, souvenirs, and entertainment. You will find original amusement machines that still work, a model paddle steamer, and an original Victorian Punch and Judy puppet set.
Be sure to check out the fascinating Archaeology Gallery, and to take a stroll around the former gasworks company building, or even just relax in the palm lined courtyard cafe. There's something for everyone one here.
