Attraction Information
The People's Story Museum is housed in the late 16th century Canongate Tolbooth opposite Huntly House, and it's a museum with a difference. It uses oral history, written sources, and reminiscences to tell the story of the lives of ordinary people in Edinburgh from the late 18th century onwards. It is free to visit too, although donations are welcome.
From work to home life, social activities, and healthcare, history is brought to life through recreated settings, costumed figures, and displays. Follow Edinburgers through the ages, from slums to social housing, and beyond. See a Bookbinder's workshop, a wartime kitchen, and even former jail, which is an original part of the historic building. There is an international significant collection of banners, many of which are beautifully made, a collection of objects from different faiths and ethnic and social groups.
You can learn about how the people of Edinburgh have come together to protest, campaign, celebrate, and change their city, and see a collection relating to the once busy seaport of Leith. It's a valuable resource for those studying the region at school or for fun, like for helping with your family tree!
