Explore the beautiful views of the West coast of England! The Lizard and Kynance Cove at the Lizard Point, offers dramatic cliff walks, wild flowers and geological features designed by nature to delight all visitors.
Don't let the name fool you, Lizard Cove is not a lizard infested island or cove. The name derives from the Cornish Lis, meaning 'place', and Ard, meaning 'high'.
Plus for some cerebral entertainment Marconi's historic wireless experiments are celebrated at The Lizard Wireless Station and the Marconi Centre at Poldhu. Two miles north lies Kynance Cove, openly considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, so who are we to argue!?
Exploring The Caves
When the tide is low, you can see a series of coves and interconnected caves. Each of them have Victorian names such as the Ladies Bathing Pool and the Drawing Room. One rock is named after Prince Albert, who came ashore here with his children in 1846! The largest island is Asparagus Island, named after the plant which is native and grows wild there.
Visit with family camera in hand in May and June to capture the wild flowers at their best, you may even spot basking sharks if you keep your eyes out! Or for the more active family why no to surfing at Poldhu Cove or kayak at Mullion Cove! Hire facilities are not too distant.
Coastal Path Trail
A popular route is to follow the National Trust Coastal path south between Kynance and Lizard Point (approximately 2.5 miles), returning inland via Lizard village and Lizard Downs. Soapy Cove, 1 mile along the Coast path to the north across Lizard National Nature Reserve, is a wild and isolated spot that is well worth a visit.
The Sea
Kids will happy to know they can swim in the sea at Kynance Cove. It's clear, azure turquoise water is perfect for snorkelling and swimming and the extraordinary, serpentine-rock formations encourage daredevil jumpers!
