The latest Create exhibition at the Abbey Leisure Centre happily contains a permanent play feature alongside it's more grown up artistic offerings by Marvin Gaye Chetwynd. At the centre of the display space is The Idol, a 2 storey interactive climbing frame shaped like a towering, cage like robotic figure, comprising labyrinthine chambers, ramps and levels. Children can climb into the Idol's head to look out of it's giant eyes before tackling the thrilling drop slide! The whole unit is inspired by the 3000 year old Dagenham Idol statue discovered in the 1920s.
It's certainly not what you'd normally get from adventure play, for a starter the entire thing is tastefully monochrome: no mad colour schemes here! That doesn't detract from the fun though it just emphasises it's extreme difference form the normal play area which just makes it seem special!
There are pre school play days weekdays in term time from 10am to 3pm for kids under 4 years, standard open sessions after school finishes, seasonal parties for everyone and they also offer private Toddler and VIP parties in this super modern play frame too!
