The Eling Experience is a great half day tourist attraction comprising the rare tidal powered Eling Mill, a comprehensive local heritage centre, nature walks and a pirate play area!
Eling Creek is situated at the peak of Southampton Water, where you can see tidal power used to mill flour on a daily basis in a building built in 1785! It's really quite unusual to find a fully functioning one so take pictures for school and maybe buy some flour!
Just over the road from the Mill is the Totton and Eling Heritage Centre, which shows the history of the area from the Bronze Age onward through great visual displays, exhibits and recreated scenes. Plus if the kids are old (and tough!) enough you can sit inside an actual air raid shelter and experience the sound of bombs dropping all around you! Give consideration to that bit with young ones.
All around the area are interesting historical and nature oriented trails with views across the water and there's a cool pirate play ship in the picnic area, as Eling Creek was in the past a well known smuggling area. So it's a nice touch that all under 16s who visit the Tide Mill will get a free Smugglers and Pirates leaflet so they can hear more about it!
Eling Church nearby is also well worth a visit, it being one of the oldest in the New Forest.
