South Devon Railway is ideal for a traditional family day out, with a journey through beautiful, unspoilt countryside full of wildlife, on the longest established steam railway in the south west.
The line runs for 7 miles from Buckfastleigh to Totnes, along the stunning valley of the river Dart, with a backdrop of beautiful Devon hills. There is plenty to see at both ends of the track, and trains also stop at Steverton, which has lovely riverside walks to the pretty village, with a 14th century church to admire.
Buckfastleigh has a museum, plus historic diesel and steam locomotives, and rolling stock. There is also a play area, riverside walks, gardens, a picnic area, and a model and gift shop with a model railway. Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies can also be found at Buckfastleigh station.
The station at Totnes has been built from buildings and artefacts rescued from GWR stations all around the west, and next door, is Tones Rare Breeds Farm. If you would like to combine your train journey with a visit to Dartmoor Otters and Butterflies, and, or Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, joint tickets are available. All aboard for a fantastic and fun day out!
