Attraction Information
Enjoy the unique tranquillity of the Isle of Wight's oldest tourist attraction Shanklin Chine, which has been open since 1817! A famous leafy gorge that is much loved by writers, poets and artists for years, and once you visit, you'll see why.
When you wander through the tranquil setting of this historic gorge, take time to just sit and look and listen. You are in a magic world of natural beauty, a rich haven of rare plants, winding woodland, varied wildlife, and enchanting waterfalls! Dogs on leads are welcome, so you can even bring the family pooch along to enjoy this wonderful place.
The story of the Chine encompasses subjects of interest to all age groups from geology to smuggling, shipwrecks to PLUTO and of course the wondrous scenery. Be sure to stop at the Heritage Centre with Exhibition "The Island: Then and Now" featuring the Flora of the Island exhibits.
The Chine is further transformed into an even more magical place when it is illuminated after dusk during the summer months with almost 200 lights, including LEDs in the waterfalls. Truly spellbinding for all ages and a great place to make some happy family holiday memories!
