The dramatic Rayleigh Mount is the atmospheric remnants of an early medieval motte and bailey castle site, built by Sweyn of Essex if you're taking notes - if you are then you'll also want to know that it's the only castle in Essex to be mentioned in the famous 1070 Domesday Book! However these days this whole area is an urban wildlife haven great for some family exploration and offers sweeping views across the Crouch Valley.
Guided Walks and Outdoor Performances are often held here so it's worth checking the noticeboards when you're visiting to see what's coming up! Make the most of your day by visiting the adjacent windmill to explore the historical exhibitions, small kids simply love watching the kooky windmill turn, big ones can learn about it's mechanisms: win-win!
There is also a formal sensory garden next door which is wonderful for kids: fragrant and visually impacting, with storable leaves and thick touchable petals incorporated thoughtfully into the planning. Particularly lovely for those with special needs.
