About Portland Plateau Walk
Portland Plateau Walk is an excellent place to have a nice walk while enjoying beautiful scenery.
The landscape has been sculpted into terraces, barrows and gullies by the extensive quarrying that took place here.
The abandoned quarries have been reclaimed by nature and are now home to many plants, butterflies and birds, so keep an eye out while you walk.
The strategic importance of this island means that many fortresses have been built in this area over time to defend it and you can still see the remains of some of these today, including that of the derelict fort High Angle Battery, which has platforms and underground tunnels for the kids to explore.
The walk is mostly along the coastal walk and some disused quarry tracks. Many of these paths are accessible for rugged pushchairs and powered wheelchair users.
After the first half mile, this route becomes more varied with some sections that are steep and uneven. Once you reach Church Ope Cove however, the path is relatively level except for one steep climb.
There is also a lighthouse on this walk, which you can access and climb for £4.
