Attraction Information
Peene Quarry Picnic Site is waiting to host your family adventure! Get the hiking boots on and pack the kit bag well because there's nothing and nobody near you. Enjoy!
In Summer the grassland is covered with rare flowers and herbs, including cowslip, vetches, thyme, rock rose and a range of orchids. It's a charming place to take kids of any age and in basically any season, with differing plant life blooming and fading over the months. It's isolated and it's a bit wild, but it's also great for exploring and genuinely feeling like you've gotten away from it all!
The many plants attract hoards of butterflies such as the common and chalk-hill blues, blue and green hairstreak; marbled whites and the nationally scarce adonis blue! In total, 45 nationally rare or scarce insects are found within this area! Obviously then if you're going with this angle in mind a few bug books, binoculars, magnifying glasses, butterfly nets or bug catchers would help, if you've got them! A nice time to spring a surprise from the boot of the car…?
Curious kids can head over (with supervision please) to the chalky cliff face where you can often find fossils embedded in the surface! Easy pickings for a penknife so slip a safe one in the kit bag. It's also fairly easy to hike up into Peene Village through the narrow lanes and footpaths, so why not go exploring after?
