About Peatlands Park
Peatlands Park was specifically established to raise awareness of peatland habitat issues so it's a great stop for secret schooling as well as for a casual nature lovers' visit. The peat here has been forming for aound 10,000 years and there are over 16km of paths leading visitors through the various habitats within the park.
The park is rich in insect life, particularly butterflies, moths, dragonflies and damselflies plus many woodland and wetland birds nest here. Badgers and hares are also present though harder to spot, while lizards and newts can be found in the open bog areas. These are cool but pretty fragile so best to observe rather than capture!
A short stroll around the Bog Garden will give you a chance to see almost all of the flora and fauna associated with this precious peatland habitat so it's ideal for either a casual saunter with the smalls or a fact finding exploration with those old enough to pick up a bit of botany as they go.
The Peatlands Express mini railway is not in operation for 2015, updates expected soon into the new year.
