Overbecks Museum and Garden was once the home of Otto Overbeck, an eccentric inventor and collector who filled the house with a diverse collection of items, including art, natural history specimens, and a display relating to the maritime history of the area. There are also loads of amazing gardens to explore, making for an interesting and varied day out with the kids.
Everyone will be intrigued by the eclectic collections at the museum, and you can learn about the history of the house and family from various displays, which are updated as new information comes to light. You can see Otto's amazing invention, called the ‘Rejuvenator', an electric device that promised to make you live longer and look younger! Another highlight is the Polyphon, a giant Victorian music box, with a choice of melodies to listen to.
Overbeck's is also home to an unusual collection of rare and tropical plants, providing exotic scents and a host of dramatic colours to enjoy. Meander through woodland, explore the banana garden, relax beneath palms, and more in this little piece of paradise with stunning views all around.
There is plenty to keep the kids (and adults) entertained, such as a self-guide garden trail (which you can pick up from the conservatory), tours around the garden and museum, plus a great selection of children's quizzes and trails, including a hunt for Fred the friendly ghost, and a secret door to discover!
