Attraction Information
Orford Castle
Come and discover one of the most complete and unusual keeps in England, dominating this charming patch of green in Suffolk. The unique polygonal tower keep of Orford Castle stands guard over the picturesque former port town and makes for some great family photos as well as delighting any architectural fans in the party!
The castle is unusually intact allowing you and yours to explore all the way up from the basement and the vital well, through the lower and then upper halls all the way to the roof where there are terrific views seaward to Orford Ness! It will delight kids that all around the rooms lurk a maze of stone passages, eventually leading to the chapel, kitchen and other chambers in the turrets! It's best not to run about, but it's high imagination territory for sure and most kids will love it but it's worth noting that there are 91 steps to the top of the keep, so give little legs some thought before starting!
In the Upper Hall there is a display unit featuring Roman brooches, coins, medieval seals and borough regalia; plus if the kids are older and more interested you can use the complimentary audio tour and take a more in depth journey around the castle.
You are welcome to bring a picnic to have in the grounds: there's plenty of grass to sit on and 2 picnic benches but it should be noted that their are no toilets on site. Pick up a free family learning leaflet when you get your tickets called Step Inside, to help you get the most of the trip!
