Come and explore Old Wardour Castle!
An audio tour, which is thoughtfully included in the ticket price, tells of Old Wardour's eventful past and the fighting it saw during the Civil War. The badly damaged castle became a fashionable romantic ruin, and in the 18th century was incorporated into the landscaped grounds of the New Wardour House. This bit however is not managed by English Heritage and no public access is permitted to New Wardour House or grounds. Nice to look at though!
Today, visitors can still climb the turrets and even imagine themselves as extras in the Hollywood blockbuster movie, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, part of which was filmed here, which is a good excuse to watch it again!
Children will love to explore the grotto and the castle rooms, climbing the circular stairs to the top where you can see for miles, across the lake and surrounding countryside. There's plenty of space for children to play or for picnics under the cover of the age old trees. See if the kids can find the rather special grotto which was made from stones from the original castle building!
Seasonal events held here throughout the year include Spooky Halloween Special, Christmas Wreath Making Workshop and other family oriented fun days usually held in the major school holidays, so it's worth using our link to keep an eye on what's coming up!
