Attraction Information
Newton Old Town Hall can be found tucked away in a tiny hamlet near the National Nature Reserve, and is the only remaining evidence of the former importance of Newtown. It may be small, but the hall contains a wealth of local and political history within its quirky, sloping walls, so make sure you take the time to find out about the story it tells!
Discover how this now tranquil corner of the island once held turbulent elections before sending 2 Members to Parliament. There are a set of prints on display in the Mayor's Parlour that give a satirical view of 1750s politics, plus other artefacts that tell the story of this former Rotten Borough!
You can also learn about the mysterious Ferguson Gang, who saved the hall, and then gave it to the National Trust in 1933! Find out who they were and how they saved the Old Town Hall, and read a copy of their book, The Boo.
You will be surprised at the amount of information contained in these crooked walls, and there are indoor quiz and trail activity sheets for the kids. The Hall also has a great programme of exhibitions that feature a wide range of local artists, subject matter and styles. Check online to see what's on for you visit.
