The National Slate Museum is not so much a museum as a pocket of history.
Slate-splitting demonstrations by craftsmen reveal the skills and artistry of generations of quarry workers. One of our friendly craftsmen slice the slate in front of your eyes, and he might let you have a go!
Every day there are an array of walks, talks and demonstrations on offer giving you a real insight into quarry life.
With imaginative interpretation, children and adults alike can enjoy the remarkable relics of the slate industry.
Travel through time in Fron Haul: a row of four quarrymen's houses that recapture significant periods from the slate industry. See the water powered machinery in motion that made the tools for quarrying slate, and the magnificent Waterwheel that gives them life - the largest on the British mainland.
Year round demonstrations and talks particularly suited to families include slate splitting and talks about UNA the quarry engine where you can see how an engine actually works.
Other activities include a specially constructed sand pit in the foundry where you can try to make perfect patterns in the sand like the moulders would have done.
There is an increased programme of family activities during each school holiday including slate decorating, dressing up in the quarrymen's houses and seasonal trails for Easter and Hallowe'en.
Families can also have fun completing a children's passport, the Quarrymen's Houses booklet or the Art Cart booklet. There is a play area for young children including a zip wire!
