Montrose Basin Nature Reserve, just minutes from the centre of Montrose, on the North East coast of Scotland, is notable for its tidal basin that plays host to large numbers of wildfowl, waders, and up to 60,000 migrating geese every year!
There are a variety of different habitat zones on the Montrose Basin Local Nature Reserve, including mud, fresh water, sea water, brackish water, salt marsh, reed bed, unimproved grassland, and arable land. This enclosed estuary covering 750 hectares, is particularly noted for the birds that breed, feed and roost there, but it is also notable for its plant life (both in and out of the water). Being a Local Nature Reserve, it is also important for the leisure activities it supports to co exist with the wildlife and bird watching, sailing, fishing, and wildfowling.
The Visitor Centre offers high powered telescopes, binoculars, and even live video footage in order to allow you to view some of the 50,000 migratory birds, as well as potentially catching sight of seals, otters, eels and salmon. The centre also has interactive toys and games, such as microscopes, puzzles, and species peepholes!
Regular wildlife events are held at the Reserve, including children's activities, and guided walks.
