Attraction Information
Monkton Nature Reserve
This East Kent reserve is set in 16 beautiful acres of reclaimed chalk quarry, a wonderful example of nature's recovery in industrious man's absence. It features many naturally important habitats, fascinating geology and an unusual quantity of rare orchids. There are 2 trails for families to explore, one within the chalk quarry and another along the top of the cliffs into the mature woodland, with scenic views across the surrounding countryside ideal for family photo backdrop! You can also find some of the 26 species of butterfly which call the reserve home, a great place for mini beast safaris!
They also boast the Thanet Observatory and the first artificial bat cave built in the UK! Welcoming facilities include a well equipped field centre with a large reference library, bookshop and picnic site.
Entry to the Field Study Centre is free, where visitors can see the geological specimens, archaeological artefacts and natural history display, and browse the second-hand bookshop.
