Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve is a delight for twitchers, mini beasts enthusiasts and general nature lovers, but this is proper countryside so take everything you need with you: there's no where to get supplies from out here!

Bluebells and wild garlic carpet the woodlands in spring when migrant warblers, flycatchers and redstarts start to return. The reserve also includes the wetlands around the mouth of the River Endrick. These flood most winters and host good numbers of wildfowl. Take your pick of tranquil walks on a wooded isle, or down to the lochshore in search of a clever fishing osprey. Listen out for the distinctive call of winter visiting geese flying overhead in their tidily changing formations or watch the peaceful paddling of wigeon, teal and shelduck!

Head out to Inchcailloch island on the old fashioned wooden ferry where a springtime spread of wildflowers await, whilst insect eating birds dart from tree to tree and the fallow deer lurk at the peripheries.

There are toilets at the Port Bawn picnic site on Inchcailloch, Drymen and Balloch with accessible facilities at Balmaha car park, so try and get the kids to have a go before you set off into the wilds! You can naturally picnic anywhere you like but if you're getting too old to sit on the ground you can hold out for the benches at the Net Bay viewpoint at the Endrick Mouth, where incidentally you can also take some awesome photos.
