Lizard Lighthouse Heritage Centre Established in 1619, the twin towers of Lizard Lighthouse mark the most southerly point of mainland Britain. The lighthouse warns of the particularly hazardous waters off Lizard Point and gives a guide to vessels along the English Channel.
The tower is an impressive 19 metres high and has a light range of 26 nautical miles, which is even more impressive when you see how small the light bulbs are.
The Engine Room exhibitions are well laid out with some fun hands on activities, plus the centre still retains some of the old engines. You can even sound the fog horn.
You can choose either to simply visit the Heritage Centre or pay extra for a guided tour. The tour is led by friendly and knowledgeable guides and covers the history of the lighthouse and the surrounding areas while you climb the tower and take in the view from the top. The climb may not be suitable for small kids or those that don't like twisting narrow steps.
