Attraction Information
Lanhydrock is the quintessential country house and estate, with the feel of a wealthy but unpretentious family home.
After a devastating fire in 1881 the Jacobean house was refurbished in high-Victorian style, with the best in country house design and planning and the latest mod-cons.
Discover two sides of Victorian life: from the kitchen which offers a thrilling glimpse into life 'below stairs', to the luxurious family areas, elegant dining room and spacious bedrooms which reveal the comforts of ‘upstairs’ living.
Make sure you take a stroll around the extensive gardens and enjoy their year-round colour. There are beautiful herbaceous borders, a fabulous formal parterre and colourful higher gardens filled with camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons.
The estate is well worth exploring too, with ancient woodlands and tranquil riverside paths. There are also off-road cycle trails, with special routes for families and novice riders, and you can even hire a bike from us to make the most of this opportunity.
Lanhydrock is a member of the Cornwall Association of Tourist Attractions.
Discover Lanhydrock House
Lanhydrock is a Victorian country house packed with layers of history and family stories. Discover the lives of the Agar-Robartes children on the Family route, with opportunities to play as they did on the way, admire the finest rooms and show-stopping Long Gallery on the Mansion route and meet the costumed servants below stairs who cared for the house and family.
In 2024, take the unique chance to get up close to Lanhydrock's nationally signifcant Long Gallery ceiling as conservators work to restore this intricate piece of art. From March to October, walk along the raised platform and take the once in a lifetime opportunity to see this masterpiece of Jacobean plasterwork up close as it is cleaned and conserved.
Please note that the house is currently closed for the winter and will open on 1 March.
Enjoy the gardens
There's plenty to see in the garden at Lanhydrock, from herbaceous borders and sentinel yews to a bright, bubbling stream, and even a croquet lawn. On the slopes above, paths weave through a woodland landscape, planted in a semi-formal Cornish fashion with stands of rhododendrons and Himalayan magnolias wreathed in green lichen. From here, there are superb views over the garden and the Fowey valley landscape.
Lanhydrock is famous for its magnolia trees, with features including a magnolia glade, and a magnificent magnolia arch you can stroll through. A raised terrace viewing area overlooks Lanhydrock church and the magnolia glade. This is a wonderful place to appreciate the 200 magnolias that now fill the 30-acre garden. It’s possible to find a magnolia in flower every month of the year, with the most magnificent displays occurring in springtime.
With level access and accessible paths through much of the garden, it's a great place to explore with little legs and pushchairs. There are also wheelchairs available to borrow and an all-terrain Tramper available to hire.
