Attraction Information
Kilmartin Museum, located in the heart of prehistoric Kilmartin Glen in Argyll, is believed to be the only museum in Scotland that can both excavate for, and display, the artefacts that they find, so that you can discover the past!
There are more than 800 ancient monuments within a 6 mile radius of the village of Kilmartin, Argyll, and many of them are prehistoric. You can easily visit many of these sites and touch monuments such as stone circle, standing stones, and rock art, plus there are burial cairns to peek (or even clamber) inside! This extraordinary concentration and diversity of monuments distinguishes the Kilmartin Glen as an area of outstanding archaeological importance. And how many museums can you visit where you can examine an artefact, then look out the window and see where it came from?!
Kilmartin Museum is an award winning world class centre for archaeology and landscape interpretation that has been established to protect, investigate and interpret this internationally important archaeological landscape, and the artefacts that have been found here. There is so much to discover at this fantastic place, plus you can also try out a range of hands on activities, including their popular quern stones, and the stone axe polisher! There is an on site shop and an award winning cafe too.
