A Neo-Classical 18th century mansion, Kedleston Hall has been the Curzon family's home in one form or another since the 12th century, remaining and thriving even today, surrounded by historic parkland and glorious architecture which your family can come and enjoy too!
There are an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures and original furnishings to explore, including Lord Curzon's Eastern Museum - full of treasures garnered whilst he was Viceroy of India (from 1899 to 1905) and travelling across Asia. Kids will adore The State Bed, surely the biggest example they (or you!) will have ever seen, though apparently no pillow fights are permitted. Boo!
Short character tours and introductory talks (10 minutes or so) are available led by 18th-century costumed housekeeper Mrs Garnett (don't worry about which day you go, they have 3 of them so she" is never off duty!). Or if you're interested in a bit more depth then you can take special tours of the stables, fishing pavilion, pleasure grounds and kitchens, which are held regularly. Check through the link at their events schedule to spot the next one coming up!
The grounds are extensive, exquisitely maintained and include the naturalistic leisure garden which is, to quantify in modern terms, neither frequented by naturists nor over imbued with leisure activities, so don't expect a playground. There are lots of natural delights however with the prevailing seasonal floral development being snowdrops in spring, daffodils in early summer and bluebells for the rest of the season. You're allowed to bring the family hound so long as you also bring their leash and an adequate supply of baggies!"
