Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, situated in Irchester Country Park, is an excellent little museum on the site of the original ironstone railway, that is home to a collection of working steam and diesel locomotives.
It is a working museum of the industrial narrow gauge railways of Northamptonshire and the East Midlands, with 8 locomotives in the collection, 7 powered by steam, the other a diesel engine, plus over 30 items of rolling stock! There is a 300 yard length of track that is laid to the metre gauge, which was used by the original Wellingborough Iron Company. Additional gauges found at the museum are 3 feet (91.4cm), 2 feet (60.9cm) and 20 inches (50.8cm).
Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway Museum has an interesting collection of industrial artefacts, displays, and exhibits, plus a life size diorama of a quarry! During the Summer, you can see Locomotive Demonstrations on the last Sunday of the month.
You can really make a day of it if you explore the rest of Irchester Country Park, which has a Visitor Centre, a lovely network of walks, and a children's play are set in a woodland and grassy setting.
Please note the limited opening times, the museum is only open on Sundays.
