What Is the Gruffalo Trail?<\/h2>\n
Inspired by Julia Donaldson’s beloved storybook<\/a>, the Gruffalo Trail brings the characters of the deep dark wood to life in real woodlands across the UK. It’s a collaboration between Forestry England and the publishers of the book, with hand-crafted wooden sculptures and interactive activity boards hidden amongst the trees.<\/p>\n There are actually a few different types of trail to look out for:<\/p>\n The best bit? The trails themselves are completely free to walk.<\/strong> You only pay for parking (at most sites) and the optional activity packs.<\/p>\n The trails are open every day in line with each forest’s opening hours, and most are suitable for buggies. Allow around one hour to complete a trail, though little legs (and excited ones!) may take longer!<\/p>\n Right then, let’s get into the good stuff! Here are all the confirmed Gruffalo Trail locations in the South East for 2026, with everything you need to plan your visit.<\/p>\n Bedgebury is arguably the most spectacular Gruffalo Trail in the whole South East. Set within 128 hectares of stunning pinetum<\/a>, six enormous wooden Gruffalo sculptures are hidden amongst 12,000 trees. Tracking them all down is a genuine adventure for little ones. The characters include Mouse, Fox, Snake, Squirrel, Owl and of course the Gruffalo himself, each carved in a completely unique pose.<\/p>\n Bear with us here!<\/strong> The sculptures are deliberately spread across the whole pinetum, so this isn’t a short stroll. The Bedgebury Caf\u00e9 serves up a full English and hot drinks to reward all those little explorers.<\/p>\n Jeskyns is a hidden gem in north Kent, sitting just off the A2 near Gravesend. This 360-acre site is packed with meadows, orchards and woodland, and it’s one of the most family-friendly free days out in the county. It’s perfectly placed for families across both counties and is one of the most popular Gruffalo Trail sites in the country. The Gruffalo sculptures are set along the Willows Green Trail. Each character is carved in a unique position, completely different to any other site in the UK.<\/p>\n Alice Holt also offers the Gruffalo Spotters Trail for families who want a more active, orienteering-style adventure. The Lodge Pond is lovely for a post-trail stroll too.<\/p>\n Nestled in the Chiltern Hills near Aylesbury, Wendover Woods<\/a> is a wonderful Forestry England site with the Gruffalo Spotters Trail on offer. It’s a great choice for families who want a proper day out in beautiful countryside. The sweeping views across the Chilterns are a lovely bonus alongside the Gruffalo adventure.<\/p>\n The woods are also home to a brilliant adventure play area with swings, slides, wooden climbing frames and a ropes trail. Wellies are a must!<\/p>\n What else is there to do?<\/strong> Go Ape Wendover<\/a> is a brilliant treetop adventure for older children and adults, and the all-ability play trail loop means even the youngest visitors can join in the fun.<\/p>\n If you’re based in or around London, there are two brilliant Gruffalo options within easy reach to the east of the city.<\/p>\n Thames Chase Forest sits right on the London-Essex border near Upminster, making it one of the most accessible Gruffalo Trail sites for families in east London and Essex. It’s a Forestry England site with the Gruffalo Spotters Trail, and it’s a lovely spot for a half-day out with younger children.<\/p>\n Over in Brentwood, Thorndon Country Park<\/a> offers a self-led Gruffalo sculpture trail with hand-crafted carvings of the characters hidden throughout the woodland. No booking is required, the pathways are buggy-friendly, and entry to the trail is completely free!<\/p>\n Top tip for Essex families:<\/strong> Thorndon Country Park is managed by Essex County Council rather than Forestry England, so it has a slightly different feel to the other sites. It’s wonderfully peaceful and the woodland is gorgeous for a family walk even outside of the Gruffalo Trail!<\/p>\n A little bit of planning goes a long way to making your Gruffalo Trail visit truly magical! Here are our top tips:<\/p>\n Most Forestry England sites charge for parking, and at popular spots like Bedgebury and Alice Holt, costs can add up on a busy weekend. Go early!<\/strong> The early bird parking rate at Bedgebury (8am-11am) is just \u00a33.50, compared to \u00a313 for peak all-day parking. Alice Holt’s one-hour rate is \u00a33 if you’re just popping in for a quick trail.<\/p>\n Don’t just do the trail and leave!
