In 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington began campaigning for a special day to honour fathers, inspired by the success of Mother\u2019s Day, which had been established several years earlier.<\/p>\n

Dodd\u2019s father, a Civil War veteran and widower had raised six children on his own, and Dodd wanted to recognise his sacrifices and the sacrifices of other fathers like him.<\/p>\n

But, it wasn\u2019t until 1972, under the presidency of Richard Nixon, that Father\u2019s Day became a permanent national holiday.
