Galway City Museum is set in a modern, spacious building that overlooks the famous Spanish Arch, and tells the story of the city and its surrounding area. There is something for everyone, with a variety of artefacts, interactive exhibits, and art.
There are 3 floors to explore, with information about Galway during prehistoric and medieval times, up to present day. The museum has a great variety of different objects from different periods of the city's history, plus there are a number of hands on activities to engage the little ones. A highlight is the Galway hooker (don't worry, it's a fishing vessel!) that is hanging from the ceiling and the Padraig O Conaire missing head statue. There is also a great interactive 3D pictorial map of Galway, which allows you to swich between a medieval and modern view of the city!
The museum also houses a variety of temporary exhibitions during the year, and has a busy calendar of events, so check online before your visit if you want to see what's on.
An interesting place to take the kids for a couple of hours that won't cost you a penny.
