Forge Mill Needle Museum and Bordersley Abbey is probably one of the most unique museums in Worcestershire, and a fascinating place to take the kids. With the last remaining water powered mill in the world and the ancient ruins of a medieval abbey to see, you and the kids will have a great opportunity to step back in time.
Recreated scenes, models, and an audio trail, will help the kids to discover the fascinating, sometimes gruesome story of needle making during Victorian times, how they were made, and also that Redditch used to produce 90% of the needles in the world!
A lot of the original Victorian machinery remains and you can still see it working if you visit on a Tuesday afternoon or at the weekend, barring mechanical problems!
Bordersley Abbey is an extensively excavated medieval abbey, which you can learn all about in the Visitor Centre, which is set in a reconstructed 16th century barn. The centre displays a number of archeological finds from the Abbey, with exhibits to show what they have told archeologists about the life of the Cistercians monks that used to live there, from what they used to wear to the illness that they suffered.
