Fan Bay Deep Shelter
These historic tunnels were constructed in 1940 as military accommodation for the gun battery above ground but once their use had happily become unnecessary they were abandoned to darkness for nearly 50 years and excitingly are now open again for the first time! Brave over 12s can journey back into the past on an atmospheric guided tour of the extensive complex of Second World War tunnels, led by expert volunteers. A fantastic insight into military history hidden within the cliffs themselves, ideal for kids studying similar subjects at school.
They've also uncovered two First World War 'sound mirrors' right next to the Fan Bay underground shelter. Your tunnel tour includes a chance to examine the acoustic mirrors close up and find out more about these amazing curved concrete discs that concentrated and revealed the sound of approaching aircraft before the human ear would detect them. These early warning devices had to be listened to inside by an expert with a stethoscope!
It's worth noting for folks with mobility issues that he tunnels are a 1.5 mile walk from the Visitor Centre's car park and that the tunnels are found some 125 steps down inside the cliff. Also note that the number of tickets issued each day is limited so should ideally booked in advance to avoid disappointment and they must be picked up from the Fan Bay ticket office by the visitor centre, not the tunnel entrance. All the parking for visiting the tunnels is at the White Cliffs, which are of course also brilliant for exploring!
Please note the limited opening hours as it's extremely seasonal!
