Dunster Water Mill is a fully restored 18th century working watermill that is considered one of the finest in the West Country. It is part of Dunster Castle and Gardens, so you can buy a joint ticket for all the attractions and really make a day of it!
The mill can be found at the entrance to Dunster Castle River Gardens, in peaceful surroundings near the River Avil. The mill currently produces stone ground wholemeal flour from organic wheat, although it is only operating on certain days at the moment, so it is a good idea to call before you visit to check whether it will be in action on the day if that's your main reason for going.
When it is in operation, you can discover how water has been harnessed for centuries to produce flour as you see the restored water wheel working. Then, you can see how flour is produced as wheat grain is fed down to the grinding stones, and marvel at the working winding gear. There is a wonderful collection of farming tools in the integral museum, where you can examine ploughs and other items that were in use before the introduction of the trusty tractor!
You can complete your visit with a peaceful wander around the gardens. If you fancy an easy walk that is suitable for the whole family, there is a lovely circular walk that is only a mile long from Dunster Castle that passes through the peaceful setting of the watermill. There is also a tearoom about 50 yards from the mill, if you fancy some refreshments (or a cream tea!) as part of your day out.
