During the First World War this magnificent Georgian house set in a peaceful deer park was dramatically transformed into a military hospital, becoming a healing sanctuary for almost 300 soldiers direct from the trenches. To mark their centenary they have turned the clock back for a limited season run and until the end of 2015 Dunham Massey is, once again, The Stamford Military Hospital!
Learn what it was like to be one of the 282 injured ‘tommies' who found sanctuary from the horrors of the trenches here; how the Grey family helped nurse injured soldiers back to health from 1917 to 1919; spend time in the ward, nurses' station and operating theatre and meet costumed characters who will bring it all to life for you, along with a children's quiz trail which will help consolidate their learning. This living retrospective has proved so popular especially as it reaches the end of it's run that a timed token system and so they may have limited availability on tickets to the house and hospital during busy periods. It's well worth calling ahead therefore to check predicted availability or planning to arrive early and get in first.
However outside Dunham Massey also has a stunning rose garden and one of Britain's finest winter gardens to explore which can help keep you busy if you're waiting for a timed ticket to kick in, plus there are plenty of floral and natural effects which roll with the seasons to inspire throughout the year and make it an interesting walk even on repeat visits.
