Attraction Information
Dundonald Castle is in its own renaissance period having been developed within the last decade into one of the must-visit attractions in Ayrshire. Situated on a hill above the village the castle offers some of the best views of Ayrshire too, provided you can manage the winding 30m climb to the top of the hill!
The ground itself up there has been occupied by one castle or another since 2000 BCE, so there's a huge amount of historically educational scope here fuelled for most kids by the novel notion of building castles on top of castles!
Fascinating interpretive displays in the visitor centre include archaeological artefacts found locally and a bright collection of heraldic shields.
Tours of the castle are available but are not necessarily captivating for younger children.
The standout event here is the Dundonald Games held in August, when there are traditional regional activities and entertainments like Pipe Bands, Highland Dancing, Battle Re-enactments and tug-o-war plus children's rides and a street procession. One for the diary!
