Attraction Information
Downpatrick and County Down Railway is located in the beautifully scenic Downpatrick Marshes and offers the best views available of Downpatrick Cathedral, the Church of the Holy Trinity, where Ireland's patron saint St. Patrick is supposedly buried.
Recent additions The Carriage Viewing Gallery and Workshop Viewing Area enables visitors to see up close the volunteers' loving restoration work. You and the kids can get into the carriages and experience a vintage era of rail travel, plus thoughtful displays depict the early history of Irish railways, major events and the reduction of the once extensive Irish railway network.
There is a cool railway themed play area to keep the kids happy and using their imaginations, plus the model railway is aimed at pleasing the younger visitors too, who can have the chance to drive some of the models!
The northern line's terminus is close to the spectacular ruins of the 12th century Inch Abbey, which means Island Abbey. It may be of interest that it was called this because originally the monastery's site was on an island amidst the tidal marshes of the river Quoile. On top of their regular service there are also some seasonal specials to be enjoyed at certain times of year which include the Halloween Trains and Santa Service!
