Attraction Information

Chester Cathedral is an amazing old building that is a work of art in its own right and full of history. You don't need to be of a particular (or indeed any) faith to enjoy a visit here: the artwork and architecture make it a striking visit for anyone with imagination, religious or not! Kids especially love the atmosphere and tend to go a bit quieter… which is a bonus on its own!

You are free to wander around at your own pace and look at all the incredible detail in the walls, ceilings and stained glass windows, both old and modern. It is mind-blowing to think that this place was built without the help of modern tools and it's well worth pointing out to the kids the painstaking labour that must have gone into these amazing features!

A guided tour is available to take you behind the scenes to really get the most out of your visit, with a chance to climb the tower and see the amazing views from the top! Eek!

You can also explore the bell-ringing chamber (cue dad's Quasimodo impression!), the Victorian organ and discover the hidden cathedral!

Other things to keep an eye out for include the Chester Imp: a carving of the Devil in chains that was put up to scare evil spirits! Plus a 200-year-old picture that was painted on the web of a caterpillar and several stunning mosaics. There is also the chapel, altar and some shrines to investigate, see if you can spot the little dog scratching his ear!

And on the same site, there is now also a Falconry Centre which while regal and suitable to the surroundings is also a massive bonus with kids as something wondrous to go alongside the quiet contemplation of exploring the cathedral. See flying demonstrations daily and they even have a return ticket so you can come and go the same day if you're busy bunnies!
