THe first thing to say about taking smalls to theCastle Espie Wildfowl Centre is that they have a wonderfully balanced nutritious grain on hand to feed the ducks with, so there's no guilt attached for giving the poor things your starchy old bread ends! You can also see Nene, red breasted geese, goldeneyes and rosy bills, if you're lucky and know where to look!
Next draw is the Wildwood Adventure Play Area where kids can indulge in all sorts of natural style play including den building from sticks and sturdy climbing structures. It also has an indoor counterpart which is not only a fun combination but also a great weatherproof alternative if the skis shave turned against you.
You can also step out and follow the Sustainability Trail, which offers you a tour of the more ecologically interesting facilities available on the site, from the wetland treatment system to the cool but kind of gross compost toilet!
The Limekiln Observatory offers a fantastic viewpoint form which to observe the many indigenous and migrant bird species who visit here regularly throughout the year. Great fun for wildlife lovers of all ages but particularly bird-kids.
Their cool climbing wall on the exterior of the interactive learning zone is also well with looking at, great fun for competent claimers of all ages if they've got the nerve: it's quite imposing!
And if you ask at the visitor centre you can pick up a pond dipping kit and get some brief and friendly truing in how to use it, so that you can gently explore below the surface of the waterways and find the living treasures therein. Great for extra curricular projects!
