Buxton Museum and Art Gallery provides and interesting, fun, and free way to learn about the Peak District through a number of permanent collections and changing exhibitions.
The award winning ‘Wonders of the Peak' gallery will take you and the kids on a journey through time, from the Big Bang to the Victorian era. There are 7 recreated environments to explore, complete with sounds and smells, so you can wander in a prehistoric forest, see a bear in an Ice Age cave, and ‘meet' a mermaid! You can also salute a Roman soldier, crawl inside a Neolithic burial chamber, and step into the study of a Victorian scientist. You will also find evidence of many wonderful creatures such as sabre tooth cats and sharks, dragonflies and trilobites, plus the numerous people that have walked these hills. The ‘Time Moves On' audio tour will add another dimension to your visit too.
There is also a Derbyshire Police collection to explore that includes uniforms, a large number of photographs, plus equipment dating from 1833 to modern day. You will also see crime related materials such as counterfeit money, drug paraphernalia, and offensive weapons. Other highlights include a fine art collection, decorative Ashford Black Marble objects, plus Ice Age animal bones and teeth from the area. Kids will love the Randolph Douglas ‘House of Wonders' collection with its huge collection of locks, keys, and unusual Houdini material! There are also some fantastic minerals and fossils to discover.
