Suitable for all ages

Venue type: Outdoor

Bryher Beach, also known as Great Par Beach, lies to the west of Tresco and is separated from that island by the Tresco Channel, where vast sandflats are exposed at low tide!

Off the southern end of Bryher is the uninhabited island of Samson. Excitingly it is possible to walk between the 3 islands at particular times of the year, making for an excellent family adventure! Let the kids help you keep time to be sure you're not cut off by the tide! Perfectly safe if you plan it sensibly.

Bryher is Cornish for 'Place of Hills', because of the numerous hills on the island, including Watch Hill, a viewpoint and Samson Hill at the southern end of the island. Sandy beaches are another common feature on the island, Rushy Bay being an example, which is also somewhere you can do some good shallow snorkelling around the rocks and kelp beds. Popplestones on the opposite side of the quay offers a great number of sea shells, whicheveryone likes collecting!

There are no immediate facilities or activities, nor is there a lifeguard, it's vast but pretty isolated, which is of course what a lot of people want from a beach! You can catch a Tresco Boat Services trip to one of the other local islands on summer evenings though, so it's not so very disconnected and the boat ride of course adds some extra fun for the kids.

Dogs are welcome all year on a lead, loads to explore so travel light if you can! If you're staying settled however it's plenty spacious enough for all the beach gubbins like ball games, frisbees, kites, boomerangs and what have you. And don't forget your bucket and spade!
