Brownsea Island is located in Poole Harbour, and offers spectacular views across to the Purbeck Hills, and is famous for its wildlife, especially the red squirrels! It is also home to the Outdoor Centre, a unique camp site and lodge offering a number of activities on the island where Baden Powell began his legacy of Scouting.
The visitor centre is a great place to start, with plenty of history and mystery to discover, including details of people who have lived on the island, from a hermit in the Middle Ages to the reclusive Mrs. Bonham Christie. The centre also has a number of great activity trails to follow with the kids. Grab a Tracker Pack for an adventurous self guided orienteering trail, or a Tree Climbing trail, which has 3 large logs to walk across and 7 trees to climb! If you fancy searching for hidden treasure, there is also a Smuggler's Trail.
Or perhaps you want to follow in the steps of the Famous Five and have a picnic, as Brownsea is the place that inspired the Whispering Wood by Enid Blyton! The natural play area is great for outdoor adventure, and if you fancy a more historical stroll, you can follow in the footsteps of Lord Baden Powell and discover more about the birthplace of scouting and guiding, and visit the Scout Stone. There is also the elusive and rare red squirrel to keep an eye out for as you take a wander in the woods. Other wildlife to look out for include a number of birds, such as kingfishers, dunlin, oystercatchers, and common and sandwich terns.
Prams and pushchairs can be swapped for an all terrain buggy, which can be collected from reception, and allow the whole family to go exploring!
