Deer viewing at Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary isn't guaranteed but the herd is fed by the friendly local New Forest keeper daily between April and September, so the majority of deer are more than happy to remain in the main meadow and are by now very accustomed to the presence of observers!
Some of the deer are white, which is an uncommon colour for fallow deer to be but makes them nice and easy to spot! There is a wooden viewing platform just a short distance from the main Bolderwood car park, so easy to reach even with little legs or pushchairs along.
Adjacent to the car park is a large and flat grassy lawn, ideal for kicking a football about or grouping up for a game of rounders, so bring your bats and balls! In fact, Bolderwood is one of the most popular family spots in the whole New Forest for spending a sunny afternoon and as such the area can become a bit congested during the better weather and holiday times.
While the deer sanctuary is the main attraction at Bolderwood, there are also simply graded walks ranging for all abilities and a large picnic area in amongst the tall trees, beside which is the New Forest information cabin manned whenever open by an informative Forest Ranger.
