One of my favourite things to do with the family is visit a zoo and it is a great day out, whatever age your kids are.

Visiting a zoo offers so many incredible learning opportunities and the chance to get up close and personal to animals that they would never normally see, which really sparks the kids' curiosity.

Over the summer, many zoos offer exciting and educational activities and special events and here are some of our favourites.

5 summer zoo days out kids will love

  1. Zoorassic Park – London Zoo

If you have a dinosaur lover in the family, then this is the event for you.

Pick up your passport and enter the time travelling tunnel at ZSL London Zoo which whisks you back 65 million years into the past to the Mesozoic era where you come face to face with some life-size, moving dinosaurs including the fearsome T-Rex, a huge Brachiosaurus, a Pteradactyl and a Triceratops guarding its nest.

That is not the end of your journey though, you are then whisked 33 years into the future where you can take part in a dig, where you will discover skeletons of animals that have disappeared from the planet and learn all about the important work ZSL's conservationists are doing to prevent today's animals from becoming extinct.

  2. Brick Safari – Marwell Zoo

    Are your kids LEGO® mad?

Marwell Wildlife is the first UK zoo to host a collection of giant LEGO® brick animals, with 81 stunning sculptures representing 27 different species, offering an exciting and unique trail to connect people with nature. As part of the Brick Safari trail, sculpture spotters can find out the number of builders, hours taken, weight and number of bricks used for each of the LEGO® animals featured.

There is also a Great Brick Building Zone where the kids can create their own animal creations in the LEGO® brick pit, or contribute to a record-breaking attempt at a LEGO® brick Python by building segments to join onto its body.

  3. Friday Twilights – Bristol Zoo

Have you ever been to a zoo after-hours?

It is an amazing experience as the animals are naturally curious about why people are there when it is normally quiet. We played peek-a-boo with a tiger last week through the glass.

Now you can hear a howl of gibbons and roar of lions as the sun sets at Bristol Zoo and discover more about your favourite animals at the exclusive Friday Twilight animal talks, relax on the lawn whilst listening to live music and take part in the Zooropia High Ropes Challenge!

  4. Marvellous Monsters - Longleat

Longleat has some mind-boggling new residents as over 20 larger-than-life animatronic bugs have taken over the park!

Marvellous Monsters is putting the spotlight on bugs and showcasing just how amazing they are whilst raising awareness for the need to conserve them. These huge animatronics will make you feel like you’ve entered a hidden land of insects; where ladybirds crawl, spiders scuttle and bees buzz.

  5. Paw Patrol Trail – RZSS Edinburgh Zoo

If you have a pre-schooler then you will know all about Rider, Chase, Marshall and the rest of the Paw Patrol crew.

RZSS Edinburgh Zoo is setting tails wagging this summer with the launch of a limited-edition PAW Patrol trail. Young pups and their parents can join theitr favourite characters as they go on an adventure to find PAW Patrol clues hidden around the Zoo for the chance to win some Paw Patrol prizes.
