When is World Book Day 2019?

We’ll soon be turning into 2019’s third chapter and there’s already a plot twist; March 7th 2019 is World Book Day! It’s time to celebrate the best children’s literature and introduce your little one to worlds overflowing with wonder, characters and imagination. Most schools celebrate World Book Day by asking students to turn up dressed up as their favourite characters, so we’ve been searching for the best costumes out there to save you some time. What book will your kid discover this year?

Kids costume ideas for World Book Day

  1. The Gruffalo
Every parent will likely know all of the words to this Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler classic. Let your little one embark on a forest adventure and march into school with terrible teeth and terrible claws (or so the legend goes) this World Book Day in this adorable all-in-one Gruffalo costume. Did you know there's a whole Gruffalo themed adventure to explore at Chessington World of Adventures too?

  2. Elmer the Elephant
Let your kids walk through the school gates as the iconic patchwork elephant, in this Elmer the elephant costume! Written by British author David McKee, and a nostalgic favourite that was popular when I was at school, your timing couldn't be better, as the book celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The anniversary is also the reason behind the exciting Elmer exhibition at Seven Stories, which runs until February 2020.

  3. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The star of the all-time classic children's picture book, just hope this Very Hungry Caterpillar costume doesn't come with the caterpillars impressive appetite! With 2019 marking the 50th anniversary of Eric Carle's classic, it's another timely choice.

  4. Peter Rabbit
Arguably the most famous of the Beatrix Potter characters, this is another nostalgic favourite to bridge the generations. Following the film release last year, let your kids hop into school dressed in this adorable Peter Rabbit costume. Did you know there's a whole Peter Rabbit themed adventure at Willows Activity Farm too?

  5. Alice in Wonderland
Don't go losing your kids down the rabbit hole if they choose to dress in this Alice in Wonderland costume this year! Whilst they may be swapping a Mad Hatter's Tea Party for a day in the classroom, this cute classic costume is a great idea for World Book Day - if you're feeling creative you could have a go at making a version yourself too!

  6. Fantastic Mr Fox
Clever, cunning and classic, you won't go wrong dressing your kids in this Fantastic Mr Fox costume for World Book Day. Dreamed up by popular author Roald Dahl, it's the perfect reason to also plan a visit to the swash-boggling Roald Dahl Museum to see even more of his crazy characters!

  7. Paddington Bear
Be sure to pack a lunch of marmalade sandwiches if you choose this Paddington Bear costume. This all-in-one is easy to prep for the morning school run, and if the recent films are anything to by, packed full of adventure and mischief. Did you know there's a Paddington Bear Tour in London that you can visit?

  8. Stick Man
Another Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler creation, with over 1 million copies sold in the UK alone, this Stick Man costume is a great pick. Just look out for dogs who want to play, birds wanting to build a nest and fire - it's risky business being a stick!

  9. The BFG
The second Roald Dahl creation to land on our list, channel your inner giant with this BFG costume. Your kids will be whizz popping with delight as they help to catch and make dreams. Plus we're sure that with their new giant ears they’ll remember everything they learn at school - just remember to pack a snozzcumber for lunch
