This Northern powerhouse is renowned for lots of things: football, indie music and The Hacienda to name a few, but did you know there are loads of kids events in Manchester too? In fact, if you’re searching for what to do in Manchester throughout the year there is a cracking selection of family-friendly celebrations with food, festivities and even… robots! See for yourself with our pick of what’s on in Manchester in 2018.

Family and kids’ events in Manchester

Spring Events

  • Robots, until the 15th April at the Museum of Science and Industry:

The robots are coming! Or rather they’re already amongst us and collecting at the Museum of Science and Industry. Go behind the lines of our robotic relatives and uncover how they are built to resemble and think like us, with over 100 intriguing examples from 500 years of robotics. Meet an animatronic baby, Maria from the 1927 film, Metropolis and many more examples of modern science. Kids are catered for with a special trail, a robot hunt and the chance to star in their very own ‘Explainer Show’.

Summer Events

  • Manchester Great City Games, 18th May, Deansgate and Albert Square:

Sports stars in the making may have found their calling at the Manchester Great City Games. It’s one of those Manchester events that gets the whole city involved with things taking place on the Great CityGames track on Deansgate or in a purpose built athletics arena in Albert Square. Families can see top athletes from across the globe compete in an urban environment and practice a few of their own moves in the process! And as it’s all built around the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run (Europe’s biggest 10k), it’s a great lesson in getting healthy.

  • Manchester Day, 17th June, all over the city:

If you asked a local what’s on in Manchester on this special day, you might very well be chased out of the city! It’s Manchester Day, of course, with a dazzling array of decorations, performers and tasty food to tuck into. The theme this year is ‘The Word on the Street’ which basically means it’s celebrating everything that’s happening in Manchester in 2018. The icing on the cake though comes in the form of a spectacular parade through the city streets so be sure to watch and cheer along.

 Winter Events

  • Manchester Christmas Markets, 10th Nov - 20th Dec, all over the city:

When December comes along, what’s on in Manchester only has one answer: the Christmas Markets. Get your Santa hat out of storage and make plenty of room for bratwurst and mulled wine in one of the biggest markets in the north. There are nearly 350 festively festooned stalls and chalets dotted about the city in 10 different zones, each with its own distinct character and atmosphere. Gifts, crafts, clothes and more will be up for grabs but you can soak up the atmosphere for free!
