I don't know about you, but we spend at least a month planning the perfect Christmas break.

Christmas is the one time of year where you can look forward to get-togethers galore with friends and family and if your home is anything like mine, it will be full to bursting on Christmas Day with visiting family and presents galore.

No matter how hard we try, Christmas Day never runs as smoothly as we plan and here are my 10 mishaps that are so common that have turned into proper family Christmas traditions.

  1. There are always toys that need assembling, but they just won't go together properly, or fast enough for the kids

  2. There are never enough batteries of the right size in the house.

  3. There is always an argument (or three)

  4. There is a surprise guest that you haven't bought a present for

  5. Family Christmas traditions without the obligatory family photo? Impossible!

  6. Someone always gets a little too tipsy

  7. Dad always falls asleep in his chair after eating too much Christmas dinner

  8. The old board games that have gathered dust in the cupboard for the last 12 months are brought out to play

  9. Someone always messes up the decorations

  10. Too many sprouts cause spontaneous combustion!
