Fabulous Formartines: Reviewing a local favourite in Aberdeen
After a drive through the rolling green hills of Aberdeenshire’s countryside, it doesn’t take long to reach Formartine’s, a place to shop, eat, walk and play! It’s a local favourite for young families and with good reason, it’s cosy, cheerful and has something for everyone to enjoy. It’s the perfect place to take in the outdoors, with a few modern comforts within easy reach so you can visit, whatever the weather!
The best way to kick off your day out is to start with a short but beautiful walk around the Haddo Trout Lake. For families with babies, it’s best to take a baby carrier with you so you’re able to cross over the bridges and head up into the forest. Don’t worry about getting lost, you’ll find a path clearly marking the trail.
There’s plenty to entrain little ones along the way from fairy dens in the trees to secret forts. Once you complete the route it’s time to head in for something to eat and drink! Or if it’s a nice day then you’re encouraged to go for a picnic in the grounds.
The cheerful cafe is brimming with natural light and is undeniably a reason to visit in its own right. Using top quality local and seasonal ingredients, the main courses on offer are truly delicious! Kids will find healthy lunch boxes and if it’s a chilly day an impressive choice of hot chocolates to choose from. Alternatively, you can head straight to the cakes, with no shortage of baked treats to sample. For the grown-ups, the range of Fair Trade teas and coffees on the menu more than hit the mark.
Whilst Mum and Dad finish their drinks the kids can run out to play in the large enclosed playground, which is overlooked by the cafe. If it’s a nice day you can sit outside on the terrace, whilst the kids play on the swings, monkey bars, tree house, slide… you get the picture! They’ll be busy out there for a while so why not order yourself another flat white?
Finally, it’s time to check out the shop, which is stocked with a wonderful collection of hand-selected goodies such as produce picked from the grounds, unusual gins and other tasty foods to fill your fridge and cupboards with. Not to mention, there’s usually some tasty tablet to sample - it would be rude not to, right?
Teaching our kids to care about the planet and preserve the environment is something that’s never been more topical. It’s an issue Formartine’s cares deeply about, which is why they run their building on renewable energy, which gives them a 100% zero-carbon emission. For somewhere so laid back and welcoming towards their customers, it seems even more impressive to know that they are equally as respectful towards their surroundings within rural Aberdeen. So if you happen to be in the area, be sure to pop in for a visit, it’s not one to miss.
